CDC's new factsheet on HIV and AIDS in the
United States
HIV and AIDS in
the United States
This factsheet provides an overview of HIV and AIDS in the United States.
CDC estimates that more than one million people are living with HIV in the
United States. One in five (21%) of those people living with HIV is unaware of
their infection. Despite increases in the total number of people living with HIV
in the United States in recent years, the annual number of new HIV infections
has remained relatively stable. However, new infections continue at far too high
a level, with an estimated 56,300 Americans becoming infected with HIV each
year.

Updated Resources On Global
AIDS Epidemic
(11.24.09)
In advance of World AIDS Day on Dec. 1, the Kaiser
Family Foundation has updated a number of key fact sheets and other resources
that shed light on the epidemic’s impact worldwide, and the U.S. policy role in
addressing the challenges.
These resources include an updated fact sheet on the
global HIV/AIDS epidemic,
http://www.kff.org/hivaids/3030.cfm, reflecting new data released today by
the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). The fact sheet includes
information on the global impact of HIV/AIDS as well as the U.S. and global
policy response. Additional fact sheets examine the epidemic’s impact in
Sub-Saharan Africa,
http://www.kff.org/hivaids/7391.cfm, the Carribbean,
http://www.kff.org/hivaids/7505.cfm, Asia,
http://www.kff.org/hivaids/7825.cfm and Latin America,
http://www.kff.org/hivaids/7796.cfm.
In addition, the Foundation has updated its Global
Health Facts database,
http://www.globalhealthfacts.org/, to reflect the new UNAIDS data. The
database provides easy access to more than 100 indicators on global health
conditions, demographics, health systems, economics and program financing.

Kaiser Launches Daily Global Health Policy Report
and Policy Tracking Tool - Part of new Web Gateway Focusing on US Global Health
Policy
New Report Details the Structure and Funding Of U.S.
Global Health Programs
(4/27/09)
MENLO PARK, Calif. – With attention to global health rising on the U.S. policy
agenda in recent years, the Kaiser Family Foundation today launched a set of new
resources, http://globalhealth.kff.org/
, providing U.S. policymakers, non-governmental organizations, journalists and
others working in the global health arena with timely information, including
daily news summaries, a policy tracker tool, and original research and analysis.
The new Kaiser Daily Global Health Policy Report, synthesizes daily coverage
from more than 200 news sources pertaining to U.S. policy discussions and
debates on global health, including relevant news from around the world. The
daily report will cover HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), malaria, nutrition, water
and sanitation, polio, and maternal and child health, as well as funding,
financing and health systems.
The Foundation also issued a new report, The U.S. Government’s Global Health
Policy Architecture: Structure, Programs and Funding that provides the first
comprehensive look at the U.S. government agencies and programs involved in the
nation’s global health response, including their funding and their approaches.
Building on the report, the Kaiser Global Health Policy Tracker provides a
single reference point to monitor the latest information on Congressional and
administrative action on global health. Users of this online tool will be able
to track the status of key legislation, policies and programs, government
reports and other resources with links to supporting materials such as full bill
texts and relevant Congressional committee information.
These free resources will anchor a new global health section of the Foundation’s
main Web site, kff.org, created to reflect the U.S. government’s growing
involvement in health in low- and middle-income countries. Federal funding for
such initiatives reached $9.6 billion in fiscal year 2008, more than double the
amount just four years earlier.
“With U.S. policy playing a major role in confronting global health threats,
these new resources bring basic facts, research and other information to the
policy debates surrounding these issues,” Foundation President and CEO Drew
Altman said.
Accessible at http://globalhealth.kff.org
, the Foundation’s new global health gateway will present non-partisan policy
analysis and background information on the U.S. role in global health issues
similar to what Kaiser provides on domestic health policy issues. The gateway
and related resources are supported in part by a grant from the Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation.
Elements of the gateway include:
* Direct access to Kaiser's Global Health Facts database providing country-level
data on more than 100 indicators across global health conditions, demographics,
health systems and program financing. The data can be displayed in tables,
charts and color-coded maps.
* Fact sheets on key issues related to the U.S. role in global health issues,
including malaria, TB and HIV/AIDS. Future fact sheets will cover other parts of
the U.S. global health portfolio and major U.S. government global health
initiatives.
* A global health calendar with upcoming Congressional hearings, government
briefings, and other events related to the U.S. global health policy agenda.
* A library with key charts and graphics related to U.S. global policy, which
can easily be turned into slideshows for downloading or printing.
* A global health glossary that defines more than 160 key terms and acronyms
frequently used in global health policy discussions.
Next month, the Foundation will release a comprehensive survey of the American
public’s beliefs and opinions about the role of the U.S. in efforts to improve
health for people in developing countries. This survey will serve as a baseline
for ongoing efforts to assess and track attitudes towards global health
priorities and U.S. global health efforts. It includes questions about whether,
why and how the U.S. should respond to global health challenges, as well as
trend questions about the U.S. role in addressing the global HIV/AIDS epidemic
that the Foundation has tracked for several years.
The Kaiser Daily Global Health Policy Report is available via email,
http://www.kff.org/email , and RSS,
http://globalhealth.kff.org/Feeds.aspx . Interested parties may also sign up
for periodic emails about new U.S. global health policy reports and events.
The Kaiser Family Foundation is a non-profit private operating foundation, based
in Menlo Park, California, dedicated to producing and communicating the best
possible information, research and analysis on health issues.
